Head coach Michael Cheika has included Quade Cooper and James O'Connor in Australia's preliminary training squad for the Rugby Championship.

With the Melbourne Rebels, Queensland Reds and Western Force's Super Rugby campaigns drawing to a close, Cheika has selected a group of players to assemble in Brisbane on June 22 before their first official camp begins on July 5 in Caloundra, Queensland.

Additional players from the Brumbies and NSW Waratahs will be confirmed at the end of their respective Super Rugby seasons, where they will join the squad before the start of the Championship on July 18 against South Africa in Brisbane.

New Zealand have won all three tournaments since Argentina increased the number of teams from three to four in 2012. Australia will be hoping to improve on last year's disappointing performance, where they won just two games out of six.

Preliminary Australia training squad:

Melbourne Rebels: Paul Alo-Emile, Scott Higginbotham, Luke Jones, Sean McMahon, Toby Smith

Queensland Reds: Quade Cooper, Saia Fainga'a, Will Genia, Liam Gill, James Hanson, James Horwill, Greg Holmes, Karmichael Hunt, Samu Kerevi, James O'Connor, Rob Simmons, James Slipper

Western Force: Adam Coleman, Nick Cummins, Tetera Faulkner, Ben McCalman, Matt Hodgson
