Greef announces retirement
January 25, 2007
The versatile Vodacom Stormers and WP utility back Werner Greeff today announced his retirement from the game.
Citing on-going medical concerns related to a neck injury sustained last year that sidelined him for many months, Greeff has decided to call it a day.
An exceptionally talented and motivated player Greeff, who made his provincial debut in 1999, has been capped 62 times for WP, has 43 Super Rugby caps and has represented his country on 11 occasions.
"Werner is an exceptional rugby talent and despite his injury last year has played himself back into contention for the 2007 season. We understand and back his decision to retire, but will certainly miss him both on and off the field,' said Vodacom Stormers coach, Kobus Van Der Merwe.
On his decision Greeff commented, "I have been privileged to have had a long and satisfying career. Injury has forced me to make a decision to pursue my business interests. Whilst disappointed, I believe it is the correct decision. I will miss not being an on-field part of this new and exciting era of play and wish the team all the best as they head into their 10th celebration season. A special thank you to all that have through this game touched my life, especially my fellow players, coaches, management, sponsors and the fans. I am going to miss it."
