Heinrich Brussow will miss the start of the Super Rugby season, the Cheetahs and Springboks flanker sidelined for eight weeks after tearing a toe ligament while playing for Japanese Top League club Docomo Red Hurricanes.
Brussow, 27, returns to South Africa on Saturday, after which he will undergo corrective surgery. He will be available for the Cheetahs only after they return to the Republic after their four-match tour of New Zealand and Australia. The injury continues a bad run for Brussow, who missed five months in 2013 with a shoulder injury.
"It is a huge blow to lose Hein for the beginning of the season," Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske told Die Burger. "He is a world-class player."
Drotske said, however, that "we have depth at loose forward", citing the availability of Lappies Labuschagne, Philip van der Walt, Frans Viljoen, Boom Prinsloo and Jean Cook.
