Samoa sent Australia crashing out of the IRB Sevens World Series event in Las Vegas after a last-gasp 12-10 victory at the quarter-final stage. Two first-half tries to Cameron Clark saw Australia take a 10-0 half-time lead, but Samoa hit back through Sani Niue before Lio Lolo scored in the final seconds. Reupena Levasa's conversion from under the posts completed triumph in a thrilling finish to set-up a semi-final clash with South Africa, which cruised into the semi-finals after hammering Argentina in a six-try, 38-0 victory.

Canada progressed to the semi-finals of an IRB Sevens tournament for the first time in 14 years after a shock 17-14 triumph against France and will face New Zealand in the semis after they dominated England 24-7. Waisake Naholo scored three tries and Tim Mikkelson added another as the Kiwis established a 24-0 lead, while Tom Powell scored a consolation try late in the second stanza for England.

Wales lost to Canada 21-19 in the first of the pool matches on the second day of competition to finish bottom of Pool A but defeated United States 21-7 to remain in contention for the Bowl title. South Africa proved too strong for Kenya 19-7 to seal top spot in Pool A.

Kenya will face Scotland in the Bowl semi-finals after respective victories over Spain and Portugal, while Wales will square off against Fiji after the latter thrashed Uruguay 38-14.

Australia began day two with a 26-7 victory against Scotland in Pool B. Cameron Clark scored two tries in a 16-point haul, while Allan Fa'alava'au and Tom Lucas also touched down. New Zealand earned top spot, eliminating arch-rivals Fiji from the Cup tournament after winning a tight pool match 12-7. Emosi Mulevoro had put Fiji in the lead 7-5 after converting his own try to counter Gillies Kaka's opener, however Waisake Naholo's try late in the first half decided the match.

The result left series leaders New Zealand unbeaten in the pool phase after more comfortable wins over Australia (31-7) and Scotland (26-5) a day earlier. Fiji were left to rue their 22-21 loss to Australia and dropped to the Bowl.

England trounced Uruguay 43-5 to take second place behind Samoa in Pool C, Dan Norton scoring a hat-trick and David Williams a double in a seven-tries-to-one rout. Samoa ensured they took top spot with a 35-0 thrashing of Portugal.

In Pool D, France kept their unbeaten record intact with a 14-0 victory over Argentina, which moved to the quarter-final stage despite the loss, while hosts United States opened their account with a 31-10 win against Spain.
