The body in charge of Super Rugby - SANZAR - has approved plans to increase the number of teams in Super Rugby to 17 with the two extra places teed up for a franchise from Argentina and one from South Africa.

The plans are likely to come into effect in time for the 2016 Super Rugby competition with Port Elizabeth-based side the Kings likely to be South Africa's extra franchise. The proposed plan will now be presented to the various Unions for their take on the proposal.

SANZAR CEO Greg Peters said: "Today's meeting was another important step in deciding the future of Super Rugby. Encouraging progress was made and we now have a preferred model that involves six teams from South Africa and a new team from Argentina."
