Pierre Spies will miss the remainder of the Super Rugby season with a biceps injury, dealing the struggling Bulls a savage blow.

The Springboks No.8 suffered the injury last June, sidelining him until this year, and he aggregated it in the pre-season match against the Stormers. He then played in the opening defeat by the Sharks but withdrew from the Bulls' team to play the Cheetahs last weekend. He had an MRI scan and an ultrasound of the area, which showed nothing, before specialists discovered bleeding and a rupture. Spies will undergo surgery this week and will miss at least six months of rugby.

Bulls coach Frans Ludeke said the injury to his team captain was a massive setback after previously losing Springboks flanker Arno Botha for the season with a knee injury.

"Both players are Springboks, were an important part of our game plan and contributed tremendously in the leadership category," Ludeke said. "But we have learned by now that you have to adapt when the injury bogey strikes, so we will have to adjust accordingly."
