Henry Speight will spend six weeks on the sidelines after breaking his jaw playing for the Brumbies against New South Wales on Saturday.

The Brumbies winger left the pitch shortly before half-time at GIO Stadium on Saturday, after a knock to the head, and scans on Monday revealed a double fracture of the jaw.

Speight underwent surgery on Monday.

Joe Tomane might replace Speight against the Stormers on Saturday, the Wallabies winger saying he is fir to return from the foot injury he sustained in the Brumbies' opening match of the season against Queensland Reds.

"Super Rugby is where you want to be so it's good to finally be through all the rehab," Tomane told Fairfax Media after playing 40 minutes for the ACT XV against Samoa A on Saturday.

"Hopefully I can work my way back into the side. My foot is fine, I feel healthy as well. But the guys are doing well and you don't want to change too much to a winning formula. But I'm definitely ready if needed. There's a lot of competition for spots, but that's healthy for the team and it's pushing me to make sure I can be the best I can for my team-mates."

Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham said: "We're very lucky [Tomane] came back and the timing has worked out quite well. We're lucky we've got a bit of coverage."
