Kieran Read's second concussion of the season is sidelining the Crusaders captain for longer than had been anticipated, with the 2013 world player of the year ruled out of the heavyweight Super Rugby game against the Brumbies in Christchurch on Saturday.

The No.8 suffered a head knock against the Chiefs two weeks ago, which forced him from the field. He had hoped last weekend's bye round would give him time to recover, but Crusaders team doctor Deb Robinson has deemed he requires at least another week to prove he is ready.

Read was also concussed against the Hurricanes five weeks ago, and he missed the Crusaders' subsequent match.

"Whenever we get a head knock in this team we make sure we take all the right precautions," Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder said.

"He wasn't feeling too good after training [on Monday afternoon], so it's really easy to rule him out. I think it is the right decision, not only for him but the team this week."
