All Blacks captain Richie McCaw will miss at least the next three weeks of Super Rugby after damaging ribs in the three-Test series against England.

McCaw suffered the injury in the first or second Test, New Zealand coach Steve Hansen told Radio Sport.

"The doctor had a look at it, and they didn't think it was great - they saw it was badly bruised," Hansen said. "So he played in the last one and he was really sore after that, so he's obviously done some more damage to it in the third Test."

It is possible McCaw won't return to the Crusaders until the Super Rugby play-offs which begin on July 19.

The Crusaders, who play the Hurricanes in Wellington on Saturday, are third overall and top of the New Zealand conference on 41 points, three ahead of the Highlanders. The Hurricanes are third on 37 points.
