Dom Shipperley's last game as a Queensland Red will be remembered for all the wrong reasons with the winger suffering a serious ankle injury in their win over Melbourne. Shipperley, who last week announced he would join the Rebels next Super Rugby season, fell awkwardly over a tackled player just five minutes into their AAMI Park game.

Play stopped for five minutes while his lower leg was strapped and he was stretchered from the field in distress. Reds coach Richard Graham said the 23-year-old was taken to hospital where he was to meet with an orthopedic surgeon after being diagnosed with a fractured dislocation of the ankle.

"They will do all they can to reduce the swelling and sort out the dislocation and then obviously there's going to have to be an operation on the fracture," Graham said. "He won't return with us tomorrow."

Shipperley has 44 Queensland caps since starting his career there in 2011 and Queensland captain James Horwill said he felt for his team-mate. Horwill went over to him as he was being treated and told him they would "get the job done for him". The Reds ran in six tries to win 36-20.

"I'm glad we did [get the win] but unfortunately for Dom that's his last effort in a Queensland jersey," Horwill said. "The main thing for him is to get the ankle right and we'll do everything we can to support him."
