Speculation over Aaron Smith's Super Rugby future has ended with news the All Blacks scrum-half has extended his contract with the Highlanders for two more years.

Smith re-signed with New Zealand Rugby two weeks ago, but delayed signing with the Highlanders until Friday, leading to speculation of a big-money offer from the Blues. Highlanders general manager Roger Clark said Smith had been fully committed to the franchise and hadn't considered another Super Rugby team at any stage.

"It's great to be able to officially confirm Aaron will be a Highlander for the two years," Clark said. "We have made great progress as a team this past season and as a senior player Aaron is vital to the continuation of that success."

The Highlanders made the Super Rugby play-offs for the first time in 12 years this season before being beaten 31-27 by the Sharks in Durban.
