Queensland Reds centre Samu Kerevi could be in line for a bravery award after he foiled a brazen carjacking in Brisbane on Wednesday.

Kerevi has been in the thick of things during a sweaty Reds' pre-season but his Super Rugby preparations took a different turn when he came to the aid of a woman and child.

"We were just driving, I was half asleep in the car, I was actually with my cousin," Kerevi said.

"He kind of just saw something that was happening next door and I just kind of looked and I seen this guy kind of just over this woman trying to hit her with a kind of vacuum pole.

"I just saw it and at the same time I just jumped out of the car while he (cousin) was driving; just kind of ran over because I was pretty shocked at the time. I went closer and I told him, I pushed him away to my cousin and told him to relax.

"I just tried to calm him down because he was kind of out of it but he kept saying he wanted a car, he wanted a phone and her money and stuff. And she was just screaming 'help, help', and I kind of just looked into her eyes and really saw fear.

"So I just kind of tried to calm her down and tried to push him away -- I didn't realise there was a baby in the car.

"So as he walked towards the car, I told him to move away from the car and got closer and just grabbed the baby out and made sure the little man was all right. So that was more my concern."

After foiling the attacker's original attempt, Kerevi then had to prepare for his return. Fortunately, the police made a speedy arrival on the scene to finish off the rising star's efforts.

"He kind of just said 'I've got to get my bag', and he went to the back of the house and he tried to crack open I think, a beer bottle," Kerevi said.

"But he must have broken it too hard and he just ran off to the back of the house and took off down the street.

"So that's when we called the police and, you know, they were really good; they got there like three minutes after and guard dogs showed up after that and they caught him." A modest Kerevi played down his heroics, the 22-year-old centre preferring to shine a light on the daily efforts of the police.

"Na, no way, to be honest, man, the police are the real heroes," he said.

"They do all that stuff every day. So for me just to feel that moment for once, they do that every day. So I'm no hero, anyone would have done the same."

While he may be a potential recruitment target for the Queensland Police Force in after rugby, Kerevi will be back doing what he does best when the Reds open their pre-season campaign against the Crusaders at Ballymore on Saturday night.

Kerevi will line up in a Reds backline that features Karmichael Hunt and NRL recruit Eto Nabuli while former schoolboy sensation Taniela Tupou has been included on an extended bench.
