Bardoul, 28, faces an eight-week spell on the sidelines after he ruptured the medial ligament in his right knee during the 34-20 win over the Bulls in Rotorua on Friday. The injury is the same as that suffered by fellow lock and flatmate Michael Allardice against the Hurricanes the previous week.

Mike FitzGerald, Brodie Retallick and Matt Symons have been sidelined by their respective thigh haematoma, shoulder and concussion issues, leaving the Chiefs so short of licks that Ross Filipo was called out of semi-retirement to play 70 minutes against the Bulls.

The Chiefs face the Highlanders in Invercargill on Saturday, with FitzGerald, Retallick and Symons each considered likely to have recovered from their injuries.
