Dave McDuling has signed a one-year deal with the Sharks for the 2016 Super Rugby season, and he will play for Natal Sharks in the 2015 Currie Cup after Queensland Reds released him early from the remainder of his contract for this year.

Sydney-born McDuling joined the Reds academy in 2011, but knee injuries in 2012 and 2013 delayed his Super Rugby debut until last year. He has played 12 times for the Reds over the past two seasons, having making his debut against the Crusaders in May 2014.

McDuling, whose father was born in South Africa, and who's family still has relatives in the Republic, also captained Brisbane City to the inaugural National Rugby Championship title.

"It's an exciting time for my family given our background in South Africa," McDuling said of his decision to head to Durban.

"I have loved being part of the Queensland Reds, but I feel the time is right for me to challenge myself in a new environment and rugby culture. I'm excited to be joining the Sharks. After speaking with [Sharks director of rugby Gary Gold], I cannot wait to contribute to a successful Sharks team starting with the upcoming Currie Cup."

Gold said McDuling had "huge potential and is an exciting prospect".

"He will certainly bolster our depth at lock and we look forward to welcoming him to the Sharks family."
