A rugby 10s tournament in the mould of rugby league's Auckland Nines could soon be a possibility with Duco Events reportedly in discussions with Super Rugby teams.

News Corporation's Jamie Pandaram reports the idea has been floated around the SANZAR nations with Brisbane a potential host for the inaugural tournament in 2016. The planning is very much in its early stages but early indications are there could be as much as $2 million in prizemoney up for grabs.

The Auckland Nines was a huge success for the NRL at the start of 2014 with near-capacity crowds turning out at Eden Park on both days of the tournament.

The 10s event would be at no risk to the World Rugby Sevens Series which continues to go from strength to strength across the world. South Africa claimed the most recent event with a 26-17 triumph over New Zealand in the final in Port Elizabeth.
