George Moala has been found guilty of assault with intent to injure, and has been remanded on bail until sentencing in May.

The Blues player was found not guilty on another charge of assault with intent to injure and also of one charge of common assault arising from a brawl at an Auckland nightclub in 2013.

Moala's brother, Siua Moala, 25, was found not guilty on all charges arising from the incident at the Desi Lounge on Auckland's Karangahape Road two years ago. Two men, Clifford Matoka and Damian Leota, were injured in the brawl, with the former attending hospital with a cut artery and facial cuts after being attacked with a bottle.

Siua Moala claimed he was defending his brother inside the bar after the Blues player had been singled out for a fight, but George Moala, 24, said that he had not been involved in the fight inside the bar because his girlfriend had held him back. George Moala admitted later that he had hit Matoka outside the bar, because the man had punched the player's girlfriend.

Crown prosecutor Josh Shaw alleged the Moala brothers and members of their party had perpetrated a "merciless" attack on two "defenceless" men following an argument, but the accused claimed self-defence. George Moala's girlfriend, Vava Fosita, testified that she was punched as attempted to leave the bar, prompting Moala to defend her.

Moala was sanctioned by the Blues when he was arrested two years ago, because he didn't keep the team informed, but he continued to play for the Super Rugby franchise while he awaited trial. The franchise is yet to release a statement after Moala was found guilty.
