Profile

Thorne's career contained many notable high points, with his leadership skills seeing him take the reins of both the Crusaders and New Zealand. In Super Rugby he won titles in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2008, captaining the franchise to an unbeaten season in 2002. At international level he played at three World Cups on his way to winning 50 Test caps for the All Blacks, captaining them to Tri-Nations titles in 2002 and 2003 and also helping to break the Australian stranglehold on the Bledisloe Cup. In 2008, following the Crusaders' Super 14 final win over the Waratahs, he took up a contract in Japan.
