Former Wallabies coach Rod Macqueen is set to join the new Melbourne Rebels Super Rugby franchise, according to reports.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Macqueen, Australia's most successful coach ever, will meet Melbourne Rebels chairman Harold Mitchell and their new chief executive Brian Waldron on Tuesday with confirmation of his appointment expected to follow soon after.

The capture of Macqueen, who steered the Wallabies to every major trophy between 1997 and 2001 including the 1999 Rugby World Cup, is the second big signing this week after former Melbourne Storm chief Waldron swapped the NRL for the fledgling franchise. A further high-profile appointment is expected this week with former Wallabies and Queensland Reds coach John Connolly set to join the backroom team with Macqueen's role also yet to be defined.

''Those are the sort of things we have to sort out. So I really can't speculate," Macqueen told the newspaper. "We will be talking about the role. It's too early to say where we are at with it. I think this [the creation of the Rebels] is good for Australian rugby. That is what excites me - the passion and business support in Melbourne. I hope I'll have an involvement of some sort … We have been working on this for a while … sitting down and dotting the i's and crossing the t's.''
