Mark Gasnier could return to Australia with the Melbourne Rebels in an attempt to force his way into the reckoning for the Rugby World Cup in 2011.

The former rugby league star is currently plying his trade with Stade Francais but is out of contract in June. Wallabies boss Robbie Deans and Australian Rugby Union high performance director David Nucifora have been keeping tabs on Gasnier while Rebels coach Rod Macqueen has confirmed their interest in adding him to their roster for the 2011 Super 15.

"Mark's obviously looking to move on with his life and he seems to have a good head on his shoulders," Macqueen told The Sunday Telegraph. "One of the things about Mark is he's now had a couple of years in rugby. He's been playing on the wing overseas, but he's probably better suited to outside centre."

With back-row Dave Dennis touring with the national side after a strong Shute Shield in 2009 it is not out of the question that Gasnier could pull on the green and gold before the end of the current campaign should he decide to return home.

'We keep a close eye on Australian players in France and England, especially over the past 12 months," Nucifora told The Sydney Morning Herald. "We have a very good idea of Mark and all of our players who are around the world now. And he's not a rugby league player any more, he's a rugby player. And a good one.''
