Stormers skipper Schalk Burger has missed training with a shoulder injury, but the franchise are hopeful that the Springbok flanker will be fit to face the Lions in their opening Super 14 fixture at Ellis Park on Saturday.

Burger picked up the injury during a trial game against Boland and was withdrawn, with coach Allister Coetzee maintaining that he will train later in the week with a view to leading the side in Johannesburg. Burger's pre-season has been disrupted by injury, initially by a haematoma and secondly by his shoulder problem.

"He looked good on Tuesday morning and the news is his shoulder is only bruised," Coetzee said. "There's no torn ligaments and no long term damage. I just want to give my captain as long as possible to recover ahead of this weekend. He will be involved in tomorrow's session again."

Fly-half Willem de Waal will likely make his return to action for Western Province as they play a Vodacom Cup warm-up against the Eagles this weekend. De Waal has been sidelined since July with a neck injury.
