George Smith is confident that he will return to the Brumbies' starting line-up before the end of the Super 14 season despite picking up a shoulder injury in their 39-34 defeat to the Blues last weekend.

Smith, who retired from Tests in January and will leave the Brumbies at the end of the season, is hopeful of returning for the meeting with the Cheetahs on April 10. Coach Andy Friend had been cautious over Smith's availability, with the flanker confirmed to have damaged nerves in his shoulder.

"I'm definitely confident I haven't played my last game," Smith told AAP. "I've had a nerve injury before in the past and came back relatively quick in terms of that regenerating, the medical staff are doing great things with me and I will be doing my utmost best and everything possible to get back."

In the meantime Friend has called upon teenager Michael Hooper to fill Smith's boots against the Chiefs. The 18-year-old will wear No.7 in Canberra in what would have been Smith's 60th straight game since 2005.
