While Scotland boast a better record against South Africa than last weekend's opponents New Zealand, their recent results against the Springboks hardly offer much encouragement ahead of Saturday's clash with the Springboks.

While Scotland have beaten the South Africans on four occasions, they have managed the feat just once, an impressive 21-6 victory in 2002, since the Boks were brought back in from the international wilderness following the end of apartheid. To put it another way, they have lost 11 of their last 12 meetings with South Africa, including seven on the bounce.

However, Scotland will take heart from their performance in their last meeting with the Boks. At Murrayfield two years ago, the Scots dominated for long periods but their lack of incision behind the scrum ultimately proved costly and they suffered an agonising 14-10 defeat.

Andy Robinson and his troops will be hoping that they do not prove as profligate this weekend.
