Backs coach Carlos Spencer has been shown the door by the Lions following another dismal Super Rugby campaign.

The Johannesburg-based franchise brought up the rear in this year's competition after a surprise run to the Currie Cup title last season.

Their defence of that crown gets underway against Free State at Ellis Park on August 11, but they will be without Spencer and head coach John Mitchell - who remains suspended after alleged player management issues.

The Lions confirmed Spencer's exit in a statement, along with the news that conditioning coach Wayne Taylor had also been fired.

"The Golden Lions Rugby Union announced this morning that Lions coaches Carlos Spencer (backline coach) and Wayne Taylor (conditioning coach) had their contracts terminated and were given notice of dismissal on Monday, 31 July 2012," the statement read.
