Chiefs assistant coach and Manu Samoa technical advisor Andrew Strawbridge remains in a critical but stable condition in Waikato Hospital Intensive Care Unit after his condition "took a small but not unexpected backwards step last night".

The Chiefs released a statement saying Strawbridge's family and doctors realise "both backwards and forwards steps will feature in this process and remain positive about the overall progress Andrew has made since he first became ill".

Strawbridge's wife, Laura, said on Sunday: "This is an ultra-marathon and not a sprint. We know that Andrew will be in hospital for some time to come but we just don't know how long that will be. We are very humbled by the continued support we are receiving and thank the medical staff and everyone for their kindness and support."

Strawbridge took ill during his flight to Samoa to join the Manu Samoa team ahead of their historic All Blacks Test and was hospitalised in a critical condition on Tuesday.
