Peter Russell's coaching progression took another step forward today when he was predictably named as Glenn Moore's assistant for the Highlanders' 2009 Super 14 rugby campaign. Russell, who has plotted Hawke's Bay to successive semi-final appearances in the Air NZ Cup since they were admitted to the revamped competition, has now been tasked with helping revive the struggling Dunedin-based franchise.

The appointment was confirmed after a recommendation from a selection panel comprising representatives from the Highlanders and New Zealand Rugby Union. Highlanders chief executive Richard Reid and head coach Moore both welcomed the appointment.

"Peter's appointment is a significant step in the Highlanders planning," Moore said. "We all look forward to working with him."

Russell, who will continue coaching Hawke's Bay, has been appointed for two seasons. "Moving from the Air NZ Cup to the Super 14 is an obvious step for a coach and it will be good to be involved with a franchise that has a clear vision of where it wants to be," he said.

Otago coach Steve Martin, whose role with the provincial side has been advertised after three season in charge, will also assist Moore and Russell.

After securing three premierships with Marist St Pat's in Wellington's club competition, Russell guided Wairarapa-Bush to wins in the third division and the Meads Cup in the 2006 Heartland Championship before heading to Napier.
