The Sharks have appointed lock Johann Muller as their captain for the 2009 Super 14 and Currie Cup campaigns.

Muller, who has 22 Springbok caps, led the Sharks to their fifth Currie Cup title in October 2008 and has been handed the reins once again by coach John Plumtree Muller's selection means that South Africa captain John Smit will not be barking orders for the Sharks this season.

"There might be lots of people asking why not John Smit," said Plumtree. "The reason is that if Johann misses out on the Boks, we still have some continuity in leadership because it allows John to concentrate on the Bok job which is intense and carries with it a huge amount of responsibility.

"Johann has been consistent and did a great job for us last year. I have a lot of respect for both John and Johann, and many decisions are made by the leadership group and John has a say in that, so his involvement as a leader is crucial."

Muller has praised the continuity within the Sharks setup as they look to go one better than their last-minute loss to the Bulls in the 2007 Super 14 final in this season's competition.

"We have a really tight team and it's great that we can go into the Super 14 with almost the full side from last year," he said. "It's really fantastic that we can take that into an important campaign like the one ahead of us.

"I enjoy the backing of the senior players and there are seven or eight guys who could captain the side at any given time - that makes my job so much easier. We have a bunch of great leaders who help with decision-making and I'm in a very fortunate position to have those guys around me."
