Hurricanes skipper Rodney So'oialo has been suspended for a week for trampling on Waratahs captain Phil Waugh during his side's opening Super 14 loss at Westpac Stadium on Saturday.
Waugh received a cut to his head in the incident, clocked as the 65th minute of the Waratahs' 26-22 victory. Upon reviewing video evidence SANZAR judicial officer Bruce Squire found that there was evidence to suggest that while So'oialo's boot had made contact with Waugh's head his wound was likely caused by another unidentified player's boot.
The contact made by So'oialo was determined to be wholly accidental, but he was nevertheless banned for a week after it was decided that he had demonstrated an unacceptable degree of carelessness and risk of injury to Waugh.
As well as watching video footage, Squire also received reports from the match referee and assistant referees, and heard evidence from So'oialo, Hurricanes coach Colin Cooper and team manager Tony Ward.
So'oialo will now miss the Hurricanes' Friday showdown with the Highlanders.
