Hercog claims maiden title in Bastad

Polona Hercog denied home favourite Johanna Larsson to claim her first WTA Tour title at the Swedish Open in Bastad.

With both players playing in their second tour final and both seeking their maiden title, it was Hercog, ranked No. 53 in the world, who emerged triumphant, holding off a late charge from the Swede to claim a 6-4 7-5 victory on the clay.

The No. 8 seed looked to be well on course for victory when she snatched an early break in the second set, but Larsson broke back to level at 5-5. However, Hercog responded immediately to break straight back before serving out for the victory.

"It's tough," a disappointed Larsson told Sweden's TV 4. "I should have at least gotten it to a tiebreak in the second set."
