Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez claimed the fourth clay-court title of her career with victory at the Nurnberger Gastein Ladies event in Austria.

The Spaniard beat wildcard Patricia Mayr-Achleitner 6-0 7-5 to deny the Austrian crowd a home winner in the event.

Martinez Sanchez cruised through the opening set as she won seven games on the bounce, but Mayr-Achleitner bounced back to lead 4-1 in the second set. However, Martinez Sanchez dug deep to claim victory in just over an hour and a half.

In Palermo, the SNAI Open final went the way of Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues, who had too much for Polona Hercog. Garrigues triumphed 6-3 6-2 to win the event for a fifth time.

Victory clinched an 11th WTA Tour title for the 28-year-old, and it came courtesy of a clinical performance that saw her convert three of six break points in the opening set. Garrigues was even more ruthless in the second, taking all three break chances to close out the match in an hour and 20 minutes.
