Elena Baltacha and Heather Watson fell at the final hurdle as both Brits failed to qualify for the main draw of the Rogers Cup after losing their respective second-round qualifying matches.

British No. 1 Baltacha, so impressive in her win over Aravane Rezai, lost a tight first set against Greta Arn and never fully recovered as her Hungarian opponent ran out a 7-6(5) 6-3 victor.

Both players earned themselves a break in the opening set but neither could capitalise, and a tiebreak was needed to separate them. Baltacha had her chances in the second but failed to convert two break points, ultimately paying the price as Arn broke twice to cruise to victory.

Watson was favourite to advance after winning the first set 6-2 against Polona Hercog. However, the Slovakian hit back, breaking five times to seal a stunning 2-6 6-3 6-2 fightback.
