Venus Williams' US Open preparations have hit a major stumbling block after she was forced to pull out of the Rogers Cup in Toronto with a virus.

Williams, who has slipped to 34th in the world rankings after playing just four tournaments in the last 12 months, will look to play in Cincinnati next week, ahead of the US Open, which starts on August 29.

"We're disappointed," tournament director Karl Hale said. "[Venus] went to the doctor today and the doctor advised her that she wasn't fit to play, so she unfortunately had to withdraw. We're disappointed, but we still have a tremendous player field."

The seven-time grand slam champion has been replaced in the draw by lucky loser Lourdes Dominguez-Lino.
