World No. 1 and defending champion Caroline Wozniacki was sent crashing out of the Rogers Cup in Toronto after falling in straight sets to Italian Roberta Vinci.

Wozniacki, who beat Vera Zvonareva in the final to win the event last year, was made to pay for an inability to convert her chances as she found herself a set down after a late break in the opener.

The world No. 1 looked to have bounced back after racing to a 5-1 lead in the second set, but Vinci rattled off six straight games to claim a 6-4 7-5 victory.

Wozniacki's defeat means the top two seeds are out, after Kim Clijsters retired on Tuesday night with an abdominal injury.

Serena Williams continued her climb up the WTA rankings with a 6-1 7-6(6) victory over Juila Goerges. The American stormed to a commanding lead early on before Goerges offered resistence in the second set.

A similar result was enjoyed by fellow former world No. 1 Maria Sharapova who defeated qualifier Bojana Jovanovski. Sharapova won the opening four games of the first set before settling for a 6-1 7-5 win.

French Open champion Li Na was gifted a place place in the third round by fellow Chinese Peng Shuai, who awarded Li the walkover after suffering a hip injury.

Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova booked her place in the third round with a 7-6(3) 6-3 win over Anabel Medina Garrigues, while Francesca Schiavone beat Russia's Ekaterina Makarova 6-1 6-3. No. 10 seed Sam Stosur also recorded a straight sets triumph in the second round as she defeated home favourite Aleksandra Wozniak, while Ana Ivanovic cruised to a 6-3 6-2 win over Iveta Benesova.
