Roger Federer cruised into the third round of the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati, downing Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro in straight sets.

The former world No. 1 recorded a comfortable 6-3 7-5 victory, and never looked troubled against the unconvincing Del Potro, taking the second round match in 92 minutes.

Federer surged to a 4-1 lead in the first set on the back of two early breaks and a strong service game of his own, which resulted in the Swiss master firing down 12 aces during the match. The 30-year-old then held back-to-back service games to take the first set with ease.

Del Potro managed to stave off numerous break points in the first game of the second set, and that seemed to give the Argentinian a boost ub confidence as he then showed great resistance in the face of Federer's intelligent groundstrokes. However, the world No. 19 was unable to remain firm when it mattered, making an unforced error on match point while Federer led 6-5 to secure the third seed's passage to the next round.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is in decent form ahead of the US Open and he produced a polished display to take care of Marin Cilic 6-3 6-4. Gilles Simon joined Tsonga in the second round after coming from a set down to beat Jurgen Melzer, while Michael Llodra toppled No. 13 seed Mikhail Youzhny.

The No. 9 seed Nicolas Almagro won an all-Spanish affair with Albert Montanes, winning 7-6(5) 6-4. Home favourite John Isner was dumped out by Radek Stepanek, with the Czech digging in for a 7-5 5-7 7-6(4) win.

Stanislas Wawrinka suffered a surprise defeat at the hands of Andrey Golubev, falling 3-6 6-4 6-1, while big-serving Croat Ivo Karlovic dropped just four games in beating Florian Meyer and Nikolay Davydenko battled past Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-2 7-6(5).

Janko Tipsarevic needed a third-set tiebreak to claim a 6-0 3-6 7-6(5) win over Edouard Roger-Vasselin. No. 8 seed Tomas Berdych moved into round three thanks to a comfortable 7-6(2) 6-0 win over Juan Monaco.
