Roger Federer blasted Dudi Sela off court in round two and was happy with his effort. He said: "I did not much have trouble on my serve, and from the baseline I also thought I had the upper hand. When it's like that, obviously it's tough for the opponent, but I just think I was superior today. It was a good match for me in breezy conditions. It was a bit tricky early on to find the rhythm. That's why I was happy to get the first break in the first set."

Ana Ivanovic progressed into round three without hitting a ball as her opponent Petra Cetkovska was forced out due to injury. She said: "It is never nice to win this way and I hope she recovers quickly. I saw she had some tape on in her last few matches, but I would be lying if I said I was not happy to be in the next round and it is up to me to take advantage of it."

Francesca Schiavone cruised into round three and was happy with how she played, but insisted she will not adapt her game to a surface which is different to her favoured clay. She said: "I think on the clay you have always the chance to come back in the point. So attack, attack, then defense, defense, attack. Here, when you attack it is really difficult. Then you go to the defense, or maybe one or two times in one point is really long, otherwise it is attack and point, because it's faster."

Jelena Jankovic overcame a back injury to beat Jelena Dokic and is unsure what caused the problem. She said: "Today I felt a little stiff in my back, and, you know, there was a little problem there. But I tried to just think about my game and focus on every point, and I was able to win that match which is the most important thing.

"I have a day off tomorrow, and, you know, I will just try to receive some treatment and feel the the best as possible for my next match. I think I will be okay. It happened suddenly in the match, but I feel okay now. I just received some treatment. I think I will be fine to play my next round."

Caroline Wozniacki picked up a straight sets win in the second round, but refused to look too far ahead as she aims for her first US Open title. She said: "I feel like I'm on a roll and I'm playing well. I believe I can beat anyone on a good day but I have to play on a high level for seven matches, and that's not easy."

Novak Djokovic thrashed Carlos Berlocq during the other evening match on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Afterwards, he said: "The first two sets were ideal. I could not play better. I was getting a lot of balls back, I was ending the points when I needed to. I was making a lot of winners. My serve was okay, and my return was great.

"I felt fantastic on the court. And there is not much I can say when everything seems fun and seems enjoyable when you're playing such good tennis."

Gael Monfils was beaten in a five-set epic by Juan Carlos Ferrero and he said: "I'm disappointed because I lost the match. But, you know, I think I give my best. Today I have a big fighter against me. I lost the match on a few points. But, you know, I take only the good side of this loss. So I'm disappointed because for sure I want to go deep on the tournament, but I think I made a great game. I think it's tennis. Today is a good day for me. It's my birthday. My mom was there. You know, all the time my mom say, You win, you lose, you give your best. I think today I sort of smile at my mom even though I lost, so I was quite happy."
