Andy Murray was grateful to avoid any drama after cruising past Feliciano Lopez to reach the last-16 of the US Open.

The British No. 1 was forced to come from two sets down in his second-round clash against Robin Haase, but he made no such mistake against Lopez, bursting out of the blocks to storm to an early lead.

His 6-1 6-4 6-2 victory saw the Scot extend his record against Lopez to six wins from six matches, and set up a fourth-round clash with Donald Young. Playing under the lights on Arthur Ashe Stadium, Murray admitted he was happy to make smooth progress.

"When you can get an early break it can kind of set the tone for the rest of the match. Tonight that was the case," Murray said. "And it was important because obviously, after having a long match the other day, especially playing late at night, if you don't have to play a three or four-hour match [it's better] because it's not that easy to recover."

Murray will now try to avenge one of the worst defeats of his career when he takes on Young, against whom he slumped to a 7-6 6-3 defeat to the then world No. 143 at Indian Wells in March. The 22-year-old wildcard knocked out Stanislas Wawrinka, Murray's conqueror last year, in the second round before claiming a straight-sets win over 24th seed Juan Ignacio Chela on Sunday.
