Serena Williams has admitted her "emotions got the better of me" during her US Open final defeat at the hands of Sam Stosur on Saturday.

Stosur's 6-2 6-3 defeat of Williams in the US Open final on Saturday was overshadowed by the American's on-court outburst at umpire Eva Asderaki, which saw the 13-time grand slam champion aim a string of stinging insults in the Greek official's direction.

Williams, who accused Asderaki of being "out of control" and "unattractive inside" after seeing a point awarded to Stosur following her shouts of "come on" in the middle of a rally, avoided a ban for her tirade but was slapped with a $2000 fine.

The 29-year-old has refused to apologise for her outburst but she has taken to Twitter to explain her actions. She wrote: "My emotions did get the best of me this past weekend when I disagreed with the umpire. It has been a long road to get back to the US Open this year, and I am thankful to have had such a great two weeks in New York."
