Andy Murray is ranked above Roger Federer for the first time in his career after clinching the Shanghai Masters on Sunday - his third title in as many weeks.

The Scot, now world No. 3, beat David Ferrer in straight sets to win in China, making it 25 victories from his last 26 matches - and he is aiming to finish the year with a flourish in front of a British crowd at the ATP World Tour Finals in late November.

Prior to the Shanghai success, he had beaten Rafael Nadal to clinch the Japan Open, and Donald Young to bag glory in Bangkok.

After Murray reached at least the semi-final of all the 2011 grand slams but failed to win any, he is gathering momentum at the end of the season and will be hoping it carries over into next year.

Federer is left to reflect on tumbling out of the world's top three for the first time since 2003 as, at the age of 30, he begins to show signs of decline. The Swiss legend, a winner of 16 grand slams, has claimed just one title in 2011.

Murray was ranked as high as No. 2 in August 2009, but then he was tucked in behind the pacesetter Federer.
