Juan Martin del Potro's hopes of qualifying for the ATP World Tour Finals in London were dealt a major blow after he fell in the Valencia Open semi-finals.

Del Potro was upset by Marcel Granollers, who produced another upset in front of his home crowd to beat the former US Open champion 6-4 7-6(4). Having dumped third seed Gael Monfils out in Friday's quarter-finals, Granollers won 74 per cent of his service points to clinch victory in an hour and 53 minutes.

The result was a major dent to Del Potro's chances of qualifying for London. Ranked as low as 484 earlier in the season following a wrist injury, the Argentine is one of seven players chasing three remaining places for London.

Granollers, meanwhile, is chasing his second title of the year, and the world No. 34 will meet Juan Monaco in the final after the Argentine upset top seed and defending champion David Ferrer.

Ferrer, who was unbeaten in 14 matches in Valencia, looked to have recovered from losing the opening set when he raced through the second to level proceedings, but despite winning more points than his opponent, fell 7-5 1-6 6-3.
