Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova cleaned up at the WTA player of the year awards on Monday, claiming the top prize on offer in women's tennis.

Kvitova, 21, rose to world No. 2 in 2011, and won her first grand slam title by defeating Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon in July. The Czech won a total of six tournaments for the year and capped a stellar 12 months by also helping her nation to Fed Cup glory.

"This season has been simply a dream," Kvitova said. "It is an incredible honour to win the player of the year award and join the ranks of some of the best players that have ever played the sport, especially Martina Navratilova. I will always cherish the 2011 season and look forward to building on it."

The player of the year award is voted on by the media, as is the most improved award, which Kvitova also picked up. In a clean sweep of the night's major prizes, Kvitova's peers then selected her to win the Karen Krantzcke sportsmanship award.

Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu won the newcomer of the year award, while comeback player of the year honours went to Sabine Lisicki. Francesca Schiavone won the player service award, and fans voted Agnieszka Radwanska their favourite singles player on tour.
