Venus Williams made a successful return to the court as she defeated sister Serena in an exhibition match in Medellin, Colombia.

The former world No. 1 claimed a 6-4 7-6 victory in front of around 8,000 spectators in her first match since withdrawing from the US Open in September because of an immune system disease. For Serena, who holds a 13-10 win-loss record against her sister in head-to-head encounters, it was her first time on court since losing the US Open final to Sam Stosur.

Venus appeared to show no signs of the Sjogren's syndrome which has hampered her career in recent times. The world No. 101 and sibling Serena spent 93 minutes battling it out on the clay surface before the elder Williams sister earned bragging rights.

The Williams sisters will head to Milan next month to play Italian duo Francesca Schiavone and Flavia Pennetta on December 3.
