Judy Murray, mother of British men's No. 1 Andy Murray, is in talks to be the captain of Great Britain's Fed Cup team, the Lawn Tennis Association has confirmed.

The Fed Cup is the female equivalent of the Davis Cup, with Britain potentially possessing a promising core of players for the future with Elena Baltacha, Heather Watson and Laura Robson all showing great signs of progress in 2011.

Murray has played a key role in her son's development - and still occasionally helps him to scout opponents - and has been identified as a potential replacement for Nigel Sears, who left the role after Wimbledon in the summer to coach Ana Ivanovic.

"We are in discussion with Judy but the appointment has not been made ," an LTA spokeswoman said. "The competition starts on January 30, so we hope to have the position finalised as soon as possible."

If Murray is appointed, her hands-on experience of the development of the British game's strongest player could well be put to more widespread use.

"If it is Judy, then she might have a wider role with coaches and younger players," the spokesman added.
