Federer to anchor Swiss against US in Davis Cup

Roger Federer has confirmed that he will play in Switzerland's Davis Cup first round tie against the United States in February, the Swiss Tennis Federation has announced.
The 16-time grand slam champion has not played in the opening round of Davis Cup matches since 2004, but admitted last month that he was involved in the decision to stage the tie on clay in the Swiss town of Fribourg.
Federer's participation will be welcome news to supporters of the historic team competition after Rafael Nadal announced he will not play Davis Cup tennis in 2012, just two hours after beating Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro to seal Spain's fifth title in Seville.
Federer also plans to represent Switzerland at the 2012 Olympics. The tennis event will be played at Wimbledon, starting just three weeks after the year's third grand slam ends.
