Lloyd resigns as Davis Cup captain

John Lloyd has resigned from his position as captain of the Great Britain Davis Cup team.
Lloyd took the decision to step down following the embarrassing loss to Lithuania that has left Britain facing a play-off with Turkey to avoid slipping to the bottom rung of world tennis. He said after the defeat that he would take time out to consider his position and he has now taken the decision that many felt was the only option.
"I am very proud of my time as Davis Cup Captain, and grateful to all the players for their support," Lloyd said o the LTA's website. "Davis Cup Captaincy is a tough job and I'm sure that the next Captain will be as passionate as I was and have no doubt that the team is capable of defeating Turkey in July. I have been a Davis Cup player, Captain and now it is time for me to become a fan."
LTA chief executive, Roger Draper, said: "I would like to thank John for all his efforts and in particular recognise his real achievement in guiding the team back into the World Group of the Davis Cup. He has always shown great passion and enthusiasm as Captain."
LTA player director Steven Martens has been asked to perform a review of British tennis and will play a key role in the selection of the new captain. Greg Rusedski has been linked with the job and the LTA are likely to want a new man in place before the clash with Turkey in July.
