Rafael Nadal swept into the quarter-finals of the Qatar Open in Doha after putting on a masterclass against Denis Gremelmayr, the Spaniard cruising through 6-2 6-2.

It quickly became evident Nadal was in no mood to hang around - the world No. 2 proving destructive on his opponent's serve, even if he did only convert one of eight break points during Gremelmayr's first two service games.

Nadal broke again before the set was up and did so again immediately at the start of the second to put Gremelmayr under pressure from the off. The German soon found himself with a mountain to climb and, although he salvaged pride with two late holds, Nadal sauntered to victory inside 90 minutes.

In the next match on court, Roger Federer made light work of Slovenia's Grega Zemlja, cruising to a 6-2 6-3 victory in exactly 60 minutes.

After dismissing Nikolai Davydenko with ease on Tuesday, the Swiss world No. 3 continued his winning streak in 2012 with a similarly comprehensive victory over Zemlja. Having romped through the opening set in some style, Federer was temporarily arrested as his opponent served with score at 3-4. But Federer raised his game to break at precisely the right time - giving himself a chance to serve for victory which he would take with the minimum of fuss.

Federer will look to improve his first serve consistency in the quarters, however, as he saw his 65 per cent first accuracy gift Zemlja a couple of opportunities to break - although he was unable to capitalise on them.

Third seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga booked a last-eight encounter with Viktor Troicki courtesy of victory over Flavio Cipolla. The world No. 6 was not as prolific as he could have been - he only converted four of 10 break point opportunities - but nonetheless he was far too good for his opponent.

Troicki pinched the first set against Matthias Bachinger on a tiebreak before racing through the second 6-1, while eighth seed Andreas Seppi battled past Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 7-5 6-3.

In the final match of the evening, Gael Monfils was forced to soldier on for well over two hours, before finally beating the resilient German Benjamin Becker 7-5 4-6 7-5.

At the Brisbane International, second seed Gilles Simon had no trouble accounting for home favourite James Duckworth, as the Frenchman recorded a 6-3 7-5 victory. Elsewhere, Radek Stepanek proved too strong for Jarkko Nieminen, the sixth seed easing to a 7-6(3) 6-2 win.

Third seed Alexandr Dolgopolov showed what he can do when backed into a corner, the Ukrainian saving six of eight break points and withstanding 10 aces from Igor Andreev to beat the Russian qualifier 6-7(3) 7-6(9) 6-2. Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis breezed past fifth seed Kei Nishikori 6-3 6-4 win to set up a quarter-final clash with Andy Murray.

Bernard Tomic, the world No. 42, needed only 45 minutes to swat aside the challenge of Japanese qualifier Tatsuma Ito - the Australian firing down 10 aces en route to a comprehensive 6-1 6-2 scoreline.

At the Chennai Open in India, fourth seed Milos Raonic showed why he is fastly becoming one to watch with a routine 6-1 6-4 win over Victor Hanescu, while third seed Stanislas Wawrinka came from a set down to dispatch Edouard Roger-Vasselin 3-6 6-3 7-5.
