Barthel's warning to Keothavong after Hobart victory
Mona Barthel fired a warning to Anne Keothavong after winning her first WTA Tour title at the Hobart International.
World No. 64 Barthel, who came through qualifying to reach the final, powered past top seed Yanina Wickmayer 6-1 6-2 in under an hour.
British No. 2 Keothavong kicks off her Australian Open campaign against doubles partner Barthel, and she will hope the German will be feeling the effects of her eight-match winning streak - Barthel will now travel to Melbourne ahead of her opening match on Monday.
Barthel arrived in Tasmania with just six career wins on the WTA Tour, but had beaten three seeded players on her way to the final, seeing off No. 2 seed Anabel Medina Garrigues, fifth seed Jarmila Gajdosova and fourth seed Angelique Kerber.
And she oozed confidence as she grabbed an early break against world No. 29 and never looked back as she sealed victory with an ace to become the first qualifier to win a WTA Tour title since Tamira Paszek at Quebec City in September 2010.
