Two-time champion Novak Djokovic breezed through to the second round of the Australian Open as he recorded a comfortable straight-sets victory over Paolo Lorenzi.
The world No. 1 began his grand slam title defence in slightly shaky fashion, dropping serve early in the opening set. However, at 2-1 down it proved to be nothing more than a minor glitch as Djokovic went on to win the next 17 games to claim the victory in 92 minutes.
Lorenzi made the main draw as a substitute following the withdrawal of injured Somdev Devvarman, and Djokovic ran his opponent around the court with controlled, intelligent strokes from the baseline.
Indeed, Djokovic scarcely looked troubled for much of the first-round contest, and at 3-0 up in the third set felt confident enough to pull off a between-the-legs trick-shot to win the point. The 2008 and 2011 champion will now face Colombia's Santiago Giraldo after he defeated Matteo Viola.
Fifth seed David Ferrer was another to progress in straight sets as he notched a 6-1 6-4 6-2 victory over Rui Machado. Richard Gasquet, however, was pushed to four sets, but the 17th seed ultimately overcame Italy's Andreas Seppi to move through to round two.
Sixth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga also progressed unscathed after seeing off Denis Istomin 6-4 3-6 6-2 7-5 to set up a second-round meeting with Ricardo Mello.

Andy Roddick may no longer be considered a threat to the title contenders, but the American looked in impressive form as he cruised into the second round with a 6-3 6-4 6-1 win over Robin Haase.
The 15th seed hit 35 winners and served 13 aces as he wrapped up victory in a little under an hour and three-quarters to set up a mouthwatering second-round clash with former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt, who held on to beat German Cedrik-Marcel Stebe 7-5 6-4 3-6 7-5.
Gael Monfils overcame a competitive start by Australia's Marinko Matosevic. The 14th seed was pushed in the first-set tiebreaker before easing to a 7-6(5) 6-3 6-3 win.
Viktor Troicki battled back from two sets down to beat Juan Carlos Ferrero 4-6 6-7(3) 6-2 7-6(3) 6-2, while Richard Gasquet dug deep to conquer Italian Andreas Seppi 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-1.
The highly-rated Canadian Milos Raonic dropped just six games in beating Filippo Volandri 6-4 6-0 6-2, while ninth seed Janko Tipsarevic won a mammoth second-set tiebreak on the way to beating Dmitry Tursunov 5-7 7-6(12) 6-3 6-4.
Juan Ignacio Chela was a straight-sets winner over Michael Russell, Alex Bogomolov Jnr eased past Daniel Gimeno-Traver, Kei Nishikori overwhelmed Stephane Robert, but Marcel Granollers needed five sets to see off Jesse Levine.
The 29th seed Radek Stepanek tumbled out in straight sets to Nicolas Mahut, while Andrey Golubev triumphed in five sets to send Mikhail Youzhny out 7-5 6-7(4) 6-4 4-6 6-3.
