Djokovic and Tsonga breeze into third round

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic coasted into the third round of the Australian Open with a 6-3 6-2 6-1 win over Santiago Giraldo.

Djokovic lifted the tempo of his game as the match wore on, claiming the final set in just 29 minutes. The defending champion took time to size up Giraldo, though, dropping serve early in the first set before making crucial breaks of his own as he began to assert his authority.

For his part, Giraldo continued to push for winners after handing the advantage to Djokovic, but 39 unforced errors did not help his cause. Djokovic then took the second set in 32 minutes, connecting on 81% of his first serves.

Djokovic went on with the job in the third set and his title defence campaign moved to the next stage when Giraldo hit a tired backhand deep beyond the baseline. The Serbian will now take on Nicolas Mahut who recovered from the loss of the first set to beat Tatsuma Ito 1-6 7-6(6) 6-2 6-2.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga also recorded a straight-sets win over Brazil's Ricardo Mello. After suffering successive defeats at the warm-up tournament in Kooyong last week, Tsonga appeared to have found his rhythm again as he thumped a staggering 54 winners en route to a 7-5 6-4 6-4 victory.

The Frenchman also fired down 15 aces to leave Mello helpless to stop the onslaught as a potential quarter-final clash in the bottom half of the draw against Andy Murray seems increasingly likely. Prior to any clash with Murray, Tsonga will have to overcome Frederico Gil who beat No. 26 seed Marcel Granollers in four sets.

Andy Roddick's Australian Open campaign ended in disappointment, as he was forced to concede his second-round clash with Lleyton Hewitt on account of injury.

Two of the game's elder statesmen had raised expectation of serving up a treat and Roddick signalled his intent by powering through the first set. The American began to struggle in the second set and required lengthy treatment after slipping awkwardly on court. Hewitt showed no mercy by moving him around the court and swiftly levelled.

Despite his injury, Roddick battled hard in the third and saved three set points. A fortunate net cord secured the third set for Hewitt and following a discussion with the trainer, Roddick offered his hand to the Australian with the score at 3-6 6-3 6-4 in favour of the Australian.

Hewitt will have to steel himself for another big server in round three as Milos Raonic is up next following his win over Philipp Petzschner.

Gael Monfils survived a scare before claiming a 2-6 6-0 6-4 6-2 win over Thomaz Bellucci and he will tackle Viktor Troicki in round three following his five-set victory over Mikhail Kukushkin.

Janko Tipsarevic joined his fellow Serb Djokovic in the third round following a battling four-set win over James Duckworth. His reward is a third-round clash with Richard Gasquet who was two sets and a break to the good when Andrey Golubev retired.

The fifth seed David Ferrer battled back from a set behind on two occasions to take out Ryan Sweeting 6-7(4) 6-2 6-3 6-2 6-3. The Spaniard will meet Juan Ignacio Chela who eased past Pablo Andujar in three sets.
