Novak Djokovic remains on course to defend his Sony Ericsson Open title as he moved into the semi-finals with a 6-2 7-6(1) win over David Ferrer.

The world No. 1's form has been below the dominance of last year, which is understandable given the consistent excellence he showed, but he looked far more solid against Ferrer who could not punch a hole in the Serbian's defence.

Djokovic breezed through the opening set and was on course to claim the match at 5-4 in the second, only for Ferrer to break back and force a tiebreak.

Any thoughts of a Ferrer comeback were shot down as Djokovic secured an early minibreak before galloping away to book a meeting with Juan Monaco.

"He gets a lot of balls back. He always makes you play an extra shot," Djokovic said. "So that's something that I was expecting.

"He was more than impressive, especially in his last match against Del Potro. I needed to play well and aggressive and step into the court from the first point. That's what I did."

Ferrer said: "In the important moments, I think I made too many mistakes. He played more consistent than me."
