Andy Murray expects it will take him a few weeks to get used to the clay after bowing out of the Monte Carlo Masters.

The world No. 4 was well beaten as he surrendered to a 6-7(3) 6-2 6-3 quarter-final defeat to Tomas Berdych.

Murray was surprised at how comfortable he felt on the surface after his opening win over Viktor Troicki on Tuesday, but admitted he still had work to do after he found himself second best to sixth seed Berdych.

"He played better," Murray admitted. "I mean, I hung in, in the first set. He had some chances on my serve. Then in the tiebreak I got a few lucky bounces. He missed a couple of shots that he hadn't been missing.

"At the start of the second set it was where he obviously started playing better and my level dropped clearly, as the result, the score line, suggests."

Murray will now head to Spain ahead of next week's Barcelona Open, and he believes there is plenty to learn from his three matches in Monaco.

"At some points today in the match I did well; some points I didn't do so well," he said. "It's going to take me a few weeks. Today is a good match to learn from because I was playing a top player who played very, very well."
