Novak Djokovic will not defend his Serbia Open title as he continues to mourn his grandfather's death.

Djokovic missed the funeral on Saturday as he competed in the Monte Carlo Masters, eventually falling to defending champion Rafael Nadal in Sunday's final.

The Serb has returned to Belgrade to visit Vladimir Djokovic's grave, but has confirmed he will not compete in his home event next week, admitting it is impossible for him to focus on his tennis.

Instead he will take a short break and bid to recharge his batteries ahead of the defence of his Madrid Masters title, which begins on May 6.

"After consulting with my family, I've made a decision not to take part in the tournament this year," Djokovic said in a statement on his official website. "I will take some time, try restore my emotional energy.

"This is certainly one of the toughest decisions in my career, but it is impossible for me to play in the next few days and to think about tennis, when there are some other things in my head."
